Eastern Washington is the part of the state east of the Cascade Range. Its climate is drier than the west side of the state. The region includes Spokane, the second largest city in Washington, as well as the Columbia River, Grand Coulee Dam and the farmland of the Palouse. It is often called the Inland Northwest or the Inland Empire, along with North Idaho, and locally “the 509” after its area code.
Around Spokane, the region includes Spokane Valley, Liberty Lake, Mead, Cheney and Medical Lake. Interstate 90 runs east and west through the region, and Spokane International Airport is its main airport.
