Spokane is the county seat of Spokane County and the largest city in Eastern Washington. It sits along the Spokane River, about 18 miles west of the Idaho border and 280 miles east of Seattle by Interstate 90.

Downtown is built around the Spokane Falls. In 1974 the city hosted Expo ’74, the first environmentally themed World’s Fair, and the fairgrounds became the 100-acre Riverfront Park, home to the 1909 Looff Carousel. Manito Park and Botanical Gardens on the South Hill and Riverside State Park offer more green space.

Spokane is known as the birthplace of Father’s Day and as the Lilac City, and each year it hosts Hoopfest, the world’s largest 3-on-3 basketball tournament. Gonzaga University was founded here in 1887. Spokane International Airport is about 5 miles west of downtown.
