The South Hill is the name for the neighborhoods that rise south of downtown Spokane. Its growth began in the late 1800s, when Francis Cook bought 160 acres on the hill and built a streetcar line to downtown.

Manito Park and Botanical Gardens, about a mile and a half south of downtown, covers 90 acres and includes the Duncan Gardens, the Nishinomiya Japanese Garden, a conservatory and a greenhouse. It is open daily without charge and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015. Manito Boulevard and 21st Avenue run from the park to High Drive along the hill’s southern bluff.

The older parts of the lower South Hill have a large concentration of Craftsman style bungalows, and Grand Boulevard is a main north and south route.
