Sandpoint is the county seat of Bonner County, on the shore of Lake Pend Oreille, Idaho’s largest lake at 43 miles long. It is surrounded by the Selkirk, Cabinet and Bitterroot ranges.

Kalispel and Kootenai people camped on the lakeshore each summer, and explorer David Thompson of the North West Company reached the region in 1807. Schweitzer Mountain Resort, Idaho’s largest ski area, opened in 1963.

Sandpoint sits on the International Selkirk Loop and two National Scenic Byways. Annual events include the Sandpoint Winter Carnival in February and the Festival at Sandpoint music series in August, and the historic Panida Theater hosts performances. U.S. Routes 95 and 2 meet here, and Amtrak serves the town. The economy includes forest products, light manufacturing, tourism, and aircraft maker Quest Aircraft.
