Rathdrum is a city in Kootenai County, at the base of Rathdrum Mountain in the Selkirk range. The town was first called Westwood after Charles Wesley Wood, a Pony Express rider and rancher. In 1881 it was renamed Rathdrum, after a village in County Wicklow, Ireland, at the suggestion of local businessman Michael M. Cowley.

The Northern Pacific Railway built its line west to Spokane through the area late in the 1800s, and Rathdrum grew along it. The line is now operated by BNSF Railway, and Amtrak’s Empire Builder passes through town.

The city covers about 6.5 square miles on the Rathdrum Prairie, northwest of Coeur d’Alene.
