Priest Lake lies in the northernmost part of the Idaho Panhandle, about 80 miles northeast of Spokane, with its north end within 15 miles of the Canadian border. Lower Priest Lake is 19 miles long and more than 300 feet deep, and a 2.5-mile thoroughfare connects it to Upper Priest Lake. Logging shaped the area from the 1890s, and today the lake draws visitors to its resorts, state and national forest campgrounds and shoreline trails.

The city of Priest River, in Bonner County, sits where the Priest River meets the Pend Oreille River, about 7 miles east of the Washington line at Newport. U.S. Route 2 runs through town toward Sandpoint and Spokane, and State Highway 57 leads north to Priest Lake.
