Medical Lake is a city in Spokane County, incorporated in 1890. It takes its name from the lake on its western edge. The Spokane people long believed the lake’s water and mud had curative properties, and in the 1880s the area grew with a salt and soap industry, bath houses and lakeshore resort hotels.

Eastern State Hospital opened here in 1891, and Fairchild Air Force Base was built nearby in the 1940s. Both remain major employers.

Several other lakes lie within a few miles of the city, including West Medical Lake, Silver Lake and Clear Lake, along with smaller lakes and ponds to the south. In August 2023 the Gray Fire burned more than 9,500 acres in the area.
