Liberty Lake is a city in Spokane County, in the Spokane Valley just over a mile west of the Washington and Idaho border. It takes its name from Etienne Edward Laliberte, known as Steve Liberty, who established the first homestead at the lake in 1871.

The lake became a recreation spot for the region, with lakeside resorts by 1959 and a public golf course that opened after the county bought the land in 1957. The city incorporated on August 31, 2001; the lake itself lies just outside the city limits.

The Spokane River forms the city’s northern boundary, and Interstate 90 runs through the city, connecting it with Spokane to the west and Coeur d’Alene to the east.
