Cheney is a city in Spokane County, incorporated in 1883 and named for railroad investor Benjamin Pierce Cheney. It sits at about 2,400 feet on rolling Palouse hills above the Channeled Scablands carved by the Missoula Floods. Eastern Washington University is in Cheney, and Cheney Rodeo Days has been held each July since 1967. Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge lies south of town, and Interstate 90 links Cheney with Spokane.

Medical Lake, incorporated in 1890, takes its name from the nearby lake whose water and mud were long believed to have curative properties. The city is surrounded by lakes, including West Medical Lake, Silver Lake and Clear Lake. Eastern State Hospital and Fairchild Air Force Base, established in 1942, are major employers.

Spokane International Airport is about 10 miles northeast of Cheney.
